Standard Pass — three areas
Covers Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Valley of Witches, and Mononoke Village. This is a genuinely full day for most visitors, especially first-timers who haven't seen the Grand Warehouse's indoor exhibits before — the Grand Warehouse alone comfortably fills several hours.
Premium Pass — five areas plus interiors
Adds Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest to the Standard areas, and — the part that usually drives the upgrade — building access inside the Grand Warehouse itself: the World Emporium shop-museum, the Satsuki and Mei's House replica, the Howl's Moving Castle exterior set, and House of Witches.
Who should pick Premium
Anyone whose main draw is the Satsuki and Mei's House replica or the Howl's Moving Castle set specifically should book Premium — those aren't accessible on the Standard tier at all, not just harder to get into. Photographers and longtime fans of the specific films represented in those interiors tend to find Premium worth the extra cost without much debate.
Who's fine with Standard
Visitors mainly there for the Grand Warehouse's main exhibition halls and the outdoor Mononoke Village and Valley of Witches areas get the core experience on Standard, at a lower price and often with more release-date availability, since Premium's extra inventory sells through faster on popular dates.
Can you upgrade later?
Pass tier is chosen at booking and tied to the ticket, so decide before you buy rather than assuming you can add Premium access on the day — there's no on-site upgrade desk the way some attractions offer.
How much time each tier actually needs
Standard Pass visitors typically plan a half-day to full day depending on how much time they spend in the Grand Warehouse's exhibits. Premium Pass visitors with all five areas plus building interiors should plan a full day to comfortably cover everything without rushing between pavilions.
